Behold!
“Who is Jesus? There is no more pressing question than this. That may seem like a bold claim, especially to those who have no particular interest in the man Jesus, or in the church which claims him. But if Jesus is who he claims to be and who John the Evangelist says he is, that question — Who is Jesus? — has implications which will one day come crashing into the existence of every man, woman, and child who has ever walked this planet.
In his Gospel, John the Evangelist dives right into offering an answer and as his Gospel continues, he doesn’t relent. In fact, the summary statement of his message some nineteen chapters later addresses this same concern about the identity of Jesus. By way of explaining his reason for penning his Gospel, St. John writes:
“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John 20:30–31
How we answer the question — “Who is Jesus?” — fundamentally informs the life we live, how we perceive the world we live in, and our life for all of eternity. There really is no greater question we should, and one day must, consider.
