What is the good life?

It’s the better than the best TED talk you’ve ever heard, or the most compelling sermon ever preached. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount begins with this word, “Blessed.” And it is this word which reorients our lives. Why does Jesus seem to turn the notion of blessing on its head? What does it mean to be blessed? Put another way, “who is truly well off? what is the good life?”

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and tough them, saying: “Blessed are…”

Matthew 5:1-2a

The answer Jesus arrives at it this: The “well off” person, the one living the “good life” is anyone who is alive in the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ.
